Since the first graduation ceremony held in 1985 to date, KU has been undertaking alumni functions under the auspices of a university directorate. However, an institutional audit at Kenyatta University by Commission for University Education (CUE) identified the critical role played by the alumni in supporting the University mandate. The Commission therefore recommended the need to register the Alumni Association with the Registrar of Societies.
The Vice-Chancellor, appointed an interim Board headed by Dr. Lizzie Wanyoike to spearhead and oversee the registration of KUAA with the Registrar of Societies. On 12th January, 2022, the Kenyatta University Council gave consent for the use of the name Kenyatta University in the registration of Kenyatta University Alumni Association.
The KU legal office worked with the appointed KUAA interim board to legally register the Kenyatta University Alumni Association (KUAA) as a semi-autonomous entity. On 17th February, 2023, the registration of the association with the Registrar of Societies was successfully finalized under the Societies Rules, 1968, Rule no. 4 and a Certificate No: SOCA-67TOQ6A issued.
